How to Choose the Right Colour for Your Space
Choosing colour for your home should be exciting, but it’s often where many of my clients feel completely stuck. With endless paint charts, online inspiration, and conflicting opinions, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and unsure where to start. That’s where a bit of expert guidance can make all the difference.
In this post, I’ll share some tips on how to approach colour with confidence, so you can create a space that feels just right for you.
1. Start With How You Want the Room to Feel
Before reaching for the paintbrush, ask yourself: How do I want this space to feel?
Cosy and calm? Bright and energetic? Elegant and timeless?
Colour has a huge impact on the mood of a room. For example:
Soft neutrals create a restful, calming atmosphere – ideal for bedrooms and living rooms.
Warm tones like terracotta or deep ochre can bring warmth and character to a snug or study.
Cooler shades such as blue-greys or soft greens offer a fresh, airy feel – perfect for kitchens.

2. Work With the Natural Light You Have
Natural light can transform how a colour looks. A paint you loved in a showroom or online may feel completely different in your own home.
In general:
North-facing rooms tend to have cooler light, which can make colours appear grey and cold; warm undertones can help counter this.
South-facing rooms get lots of light throughout the day, so most colours work well here – just be mindful that very bright colours can feel overwhelming and a bright white can be blinding!
East or west-facing rooms change throughout the day, so it’s worth testing samples and observing how they shift in different light. It’s important to consider what time of day you generally use the room!
3. Test, Test, Test!
Paint samples are so important in determining the best choice for your space – but don’t just dab them in one small spot. Try painting pieces of card so you can move them around the room and live with them for a few days to see how they look in morning, afternoon and evening light.
4. Take the Whole Room Into Account
When choosing colour, think beyond just the walls. Consider:
Flooring
Existing furniture
Curtains and upholstery
The view from one room to the next
A colour that looks lovely on its own might clash with nearby elements if the whole picture isn’t considered. That’s where a designer’s eye really helps – pulling all the elements together into a cohesive, balanced scheme.
