4 Simple Ways to Make Your Home Cosy for Autumn

As the nights draw in and the weather cools, I'm reaching for my scarf and boots. But just as we start to change our wardrobes for the new season, there are a few simple tweaks we can make at home to help with the transition, too.

You don't need to redecorate or invest in lots of new things to make your home feel cosy for autumn. A few thoughtful changes to your lighting, textiles and everyday essentials can make all the difference.

Here are four simple ways to make your home feel warm, comfortable and ready for the colder months ahead.

1. Create a Cosy Atmosphere with Lighting

As the evenings get darker, lighting becomes even more important in creating a warm and inviting home.

Rather than relying on the main ceiling light, try switching on the lamps dotted around your rooms. Table lamps, floor lamps and wall lights create softer pools of light, helping a space feel more relaxed and comfortable.

Candles are another lovely way to introduce a little warmth and atmosphere. I always like to have a few to hand, whether I'm lighting a scented candle in the living room or adding decorative candles to a dining table.

A few of my favourites are The White Company for scented candles and Susie Watson Designs for decorative candles.

My tip: Think about how you use each room in the evening and where a little extra light would be useful. A reading lamp beside an armchair or a table lamp in a dark corner can make a real difference.

2. Give Your Hallway an Autumn Update

The hallway is often the first space we see when we come home, and during the colder months it can quickly become a dumping ground for coats, boots, bags and everything else we need when heading out.

A little seasonal switch-up can help keep things organised and make coming home feel that bit more welcoming.

Put away your flip-flops and sun hats until next summer, make space for winter coats and boots, and think about how to keep everyday essentials within easy reach.

Baskets are brilliant for storing gloves and hats by the door. Peg rails and wall hooks are also practical additions, particularly for getting school bags off the floor.

You don't need a large hallway to make this work. A few well-placed hooks, a basket or two and a designated spot for shoes can help even a small entrance feel more organised.

My tip: Think about what your family reaches for most often when heading out. Keeping those things accessible, rather than tucked away in a cupboard, makes everyday routines that little bit easier.

3. Layer Up with Soft Textiles

One of the easiest ways to make your home feel cosy for autumn is to bring out the blankets and throws.

Drape a wool throw over the sofa, add an extra layer to the end of your bed or keep a soft blanket folded over an armchair ready for a chilly evening.

I love woolly throws, while my children are firmly in the fleece blanket camp! It's about finding the textures and materials that work for you and your family.

Soft textiles add warmth and texture to a room, helping it feel more comfortable and inviting as the temperature drops. They can also be a simple way to introduce colour or pattern without making any permanent changes.

If your living room feels a little flat, try layering different textures, such as wool, linen and velvet, to create more depth and interest.

My tip: Before buying anything new, have a look at what you already own. Moving a throw from the bedroom to the living room or bringing out a cushion you've had tucked away can give a room a fresh feel without spending a penny.

4. Make Space for the Little Comforts

Sometimes, it's the smallest things that make home feel special during the colder months.

A hot water bottle for chilly evenings, a beautiful mug to wrap your hands around, or a good book to settle down with can all help make those darker evenings something to look forward to.

I'm a book lover and nearly always have something on the go. My favourite read this year has been The Correspondent by Virginia Evans and I have Les Misérables by Victor Hugo ready to read next. I love turning to a classic at this time of year, when the evenings invite a slower pace.

It's not about creating a perfectly styled home, that’s not realistic! It's about making your spaces work for the way you want to live, especially as our routines naturally change with the seasons.

My tip: Think about the small rituals you enjoy at home during autumn and winter. A little thought about where you read, relax or enjoy a quiet cup of tea can help make those everyday moments feel even better.

Small Changes, A More Comfortable Home

Making your home feel cosy for autumn doesn't need to involve a big makeover. Often, it's the simple changes that have the biggest impact: softer lighting, a more organised hallway, extra layers of texture and a few everyday comforts.

It's also a good reminder that a well-considered home isn't just about how it looks. It's about how it feels and how well it supports the way you live.
